"Are you a math PhD? Let me test you on this proof."
"You're going to college? Let me test you on what majors get the best paying jobs."
There are always people who like to test you in various ways - "Give me an answer in 30 seconds, no sneaky searching allowed" - they understand women better than women do, understand men better than men do, understand them better than anyone else. They assume you lack the ability to choose for yourself and can always stand on a higher ground to scrutinize and guide - from the exam papers of childhood's test-oriented education, to life direction and social issues, everything has their pre-set standard answers. Like any other toxic concept, this symptom is both ridiculous and pitiful, yet it seems to reflect subtle power dynamics.
Have you been tested too? Have you experienced mansplaining? Teachers, authorities... Who is setting the rules behind these questions? On September 10th, SeaUni invites you to our Seattle queer feminist open mic on Teacher's Day, to shatter the fragility and ignorance behind the "let me test you" mentality.
