A Personal Message from Executive Director Maureen Ewing

Dear UHeights Community,

It has been my honor and privilege to serve as UHeights’ executive director for the last 10 years, and so it is bittersweet to announce my transition out of the role this summer 2023. After 20 years in nonprofit leadership, I will be taking time to rest, reflect and focus on family, before my next adventure.

I will continue to work closely with our board of directors, led by co-chairs Sue Samuelson and Keith Imper, as they manage the search for UHeights’ new executive director to ensure our continued strategic direction and critical community impact. With the support of our strong and dedicated staff, we will continue to ensure a smooth transition as the search continues.

Together we have accomplished so much, including:

  • Investing $10M to preserve our historic community center, including a new playground, UHeights Plaza, roofline restoration project, seismic retrofit, The Auditorium renovation, and elevator, with a new paint job and community kitchen on the way!

  • Expanding to 175 early learning spots, with a focus on allocating spots for families who are low-income.

  • Responding to community needs to serve our unhoused neighbors through meal programs, hygiene services, and life-giving support for people living in their vehicles, including a safe lot.

  • Providing a home for the over 4,000 youth who attend early learning, school, afterschool and summer programs.

  • Providing an affordable space for 12 residents organizations, as well as arts and cultural programs that are accessible to all through our pay-what-you-can model and scholarships.

Because of all of you, I have grown tremendously at UHeights and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the incredible team of staff, board, volunteers, donors, and resident organizations who make our community center the vibrant hub it is today.

We will continue to keep you informed throughout the transition, but please contact us if you have any questions. I hope you will join me in being a life-long supporter of UHeights’ work to be a thriving community center for the thousands of people we reach every year. Together, UHeights will continue to be an important community anchor for another 121 years.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

Gratefully,

Maureen Ewing

P.S. I would love to see you at our upcoming Reaching New Heights event May 10, 4:30-6:30PM in The Auditorium to celebrate our time together and UHeights’ elevator installation, making the building accessible for ALL!
